In-play betting
In-play (live) betting means placing bets during the match, on odds that move in real time with the score, the time left and events (goals, red cards, injuries). Prices shift very quickly, and bookmakers’ margins are often higher than before kick-off.
Before a match, probabilities rest on form, team strength and context. In-play, two variables take over: the current score and the time remaining. The further the match goes, the less time there is to score, and the more the score of the moment weighs on the final result. A team trailing by a goal on the hour sees its chance of winning shrink, even if it is on top.
Live odds are therefore recalculated constantly. After a goal or a red card, markets are often suspended for a few seconds, then reopen at a new price. That speed creates traps: impulsive decisions, prices that have already moved by the time you confirm, video streams running slightly behind the real action.
The margin is usually higher than before kick-off, and the temptation to keep betting during the game is strong. In-play betting therefore demands even more staking discipline: set your budget before kick-off and stick to it.
To read a match in progress, the right reflex is still to think in probabilities: how many goals can still be expected in the time left, and what would it take for the score to change the outcome?
Example
Before kick-off, with 1.5 expected goals for the home side and 1.1 for the visitors, a Poisson model gives roughly 46% / 26% / 28%. On the hour, the visitors lead 0-1; simply scaling the expected goals down to the remaining third of the match (0.50 and 0.37) gives roughly 7% / 23% / 70%.
