Assist
An assist is the final pass (or last deliberate touch) by a player that directly allows a team-mate to score. It is recorded in individual statistics, alongside goals, to measure a player's attacking contribution.
The principle is simple; the attribution much less so. There is no single rule: each statistics provider (competition organisers, data companies, specialist sites) applies its own criteria, and the same goal can carry an assist on one site and not on another. The grey areas are well known: a pass deflected by an opponent, a shot parried by the goalkeeper and tucked in by a team-mate, a scorer who dribbles past several players after receiving the ball.
Some fantasy football games use even broader scoring and award, for example, an assist for winning a penalty. Conversely, an own goal, a direct free kick or a solo effort after winning the ball back usually has no assist. In the major leagues, around seven goals in ten come with an assist.
The assist remains an outcome statistic: it depends on a team-mate's finishing. To judge pure creativity, it is complemented by key passes (passes leading to a shot, scored or not) and by xA, which measures the quality of the chances provided.
Example
A team that scores 60 goals in a season has roughly 43 of them assisted, taking a typical rate of about 72% (60 × 0.72 = 43.2). The other 17 or so come from penalties, direct free kicks, own goals or solo efforts.
How Elofoot uses it
In the AI analysis, Elofoot's server calculates, for each team's main creators, the probability of providing at least one assist. It starts from the team's expected goals, assumes that about 72% of goals come with an assist, then shares that volume between players according to their actual assists (and, to a lesser extent, their goals). The AI's text only comments on these figures.
