European handicap
A European handicap is a 1X2 bet played on an adjusted score: a whole number of goals is taken from (or given to) one team before reading the result. With a -1 handicap, the favourite must win by at least 2 goals; a one-goal win produces a « handicap draw ».
When a favourite is overwhelming, a straight win pays very little. The handicap rebalances the game: a virtual goal deficit is given to the stronger side (or a head start to the weaker one), and you bet on the result of that adjusted match.
It is also called a « 3-way » handicap because it keeps three outcomes, like 1X2. With a -1 handicap on the home side: « 1 handicap » wins if they win by 2 goals or more; « X handicap » (the handicap draw) wins if they win by exactly 1 goal; « 2 handicap » wins if they draw or lose. There is never a refund: that is the main difference from the Asian handicap, where landing exactly on the line returns the stake.
The classic trap is forgetting the handicap draw. Backing a favourite at -1 means demanding a two-goal margin, which happens far less often than a simple win. With 1.5 and 1.1 expected goals, a Poisson model gives the home side about a 46% chance of winning, but only 23% of winning by 2 goals or more. The handicap applies to normal time unless the operator states otherwise.

A -1 handicap on the home side. Final score 3-1 → adjusted 2-1: « 1 handicap » wins. Final score 2-1 → adjusted 1-1: « X handicap » (handicap draw) wins. Final score 1-1 → adjusted 0-1: « 2 handicap » wins.
