Asian handicap
The Asian handicap is a two-way bet that removes the draw: one team gets a goal head start or deficit (0, -0.5, -1, -0.25…). Depending on the line, the stake can be won, lost, refunded, or half won / half refunded.
The Asian handicap comes in three families of lines. Half lines (-0.5, -1.5…) never refund: at -0.5 the team simply has to win. Whole lines (0, -1, -2…) refund the stake if the margin lands exactly on the line: at 0 a draw is refunded; at -1 a one-goal win is refunded.
Quarter lines (-0.25, -0.75, -1.25…) split the stake into two bets on the neighbouring lines. -0.25 = half at 0 and half at -0.5: a draw refunds half the stake and loses the other half. -0.75 = half at -0.5 and half at -1: a one-goal win wins one half and refunds the other. Positive lines (+0.25, +0.5…) work the other way round, for the underdog.
The market is popular because it turns the match into two outcomes at similar prices, often around 1.90. But every half refund also trims the possible return, and you need to read the line carefully: -0.75 and -1 settle very differently on a 1-0 win. Like any bet it remains risky; only play with money you can afford to lose.
Example
A £10 stake at odds of 1.90. At -0.25: win → £19 returned; draw → £5 refunded, £5 lost; defeat → £10 lost. At -0.75: win by 2 goals or more → £19; win by 1 goal → 5 × 1.90 + 5 = £14.50 returned (£4.50 profit); draw or defeat → £10 lost.
